They're Doing in America What They Executed with Christianity

The Trump phenomenon's most illuminating and characteristic occasions – not its most significant, nor most harsh, nor most threatening, nor most senseless, but perhaps its most illuminating – came earlier this autumn. Over the span of several weeks, the US president began displaying the public his intentions for an ornate dance hall twice the size compared to the White House and then began unilaterally ripping down the eastern section to construct it.

He has performed deeds 10,000 times as bad – the existing assessment of deaths resulting from his reductions to international aid amounts to 600,000 and growing, and presently a study projected his petroleum strategies would result in fatalities an additional 1.3 million. Yet nothing as characteristic. No former leader would have attempted – really, no other president would have imagined – independently wrecking significant portions of the presidential residence to construct a royal-themed celebration hall, with the active collaboration of multiple America's wealthiest, almost all of whom have business with public institutions.

We went from 'the humble will receive the Earth' toward 'the humble will perish to cholera'

As bewildering as it is to witness the president attempt to overturn the old idea of democracy and substitute it with its complete opposite, there is one large group within America who might not perceive it entirely new. That encompasses people such as ourselves – in older age cohorts a near majority – who were raised as conventional Protestant believers.

We have watched throughout the years while conservative evangelical congregations converted the Savior we learned about into exactly the opposite of who we understood him to be. Fundamentally, they transformed an image of compassion into a symbol of hostility who approves exactly the harshness that he criticized in scripture; this has happened more gradually, over decades as opposed to months, however it is still disconcerting through similar means, a bewildering emotional blow for numerous individuals.

A Harmful Christianity Takes Hold

Therefore allow me to outline the Savior that I grew up with, since in theory the Savior is the core of Christian religion, and because the fastest-growing cadre of Americans may possess limited understanding about him because they identify as atheists or uncertain individuals or nones. I have no problem with these different approaches, nor with any other faith; but I do think that exist valuable insights of substantial value within Christian narrative.

It is decidedly definitely not the narrative of a mighty king arising; instead, a child comes into the world to displaced parents in a storage space, who need to rapidly escape to a foreign land to evade covert authorities. The child matures in simple surroundings, a laboring woodworker; his doctrine concerns compassion for fellow humans, particularly for the disadvantaged – not simply tender feelings, but tangible care, expressed by feeding and sheltering. The Savior's reaction to aggression is to present the other cheek – not as a demonstration of compliant endurance, but as a way to teach the attacker; his crime policy indicates that whenever a person pilfers your coat you must offer him your sweater also.

The obvious and clear reality that the Savior from scripture requests a form of extreme compassion focused on the poor is what has always made the Christian faith somewhat of a scandalous religion: engaging for the populace, but because of its natural unconventionality demanding to be contained. During the 1950s it was contained through watering down – Protestant Christianity was so dominant that it practically sanctified existing conditions.

A Battle for the Finest Among Us

So I have been encouraged to see the persistent defiance against Trump arise in this past year. It has been great solace to participate in developing the initiative that has demonstrated publicly through repeated demonstrations, and seems to have inspired citizens to show up in significant amounts in interim political contests. We must have to persist with it, and through comparable resolve, featuring US banners during all protests and requests to the highest qualities in US history.

We shall be interrogated ... about how you treated the stranger? Did you accept these individuals and receive them or not?

The country is optimally secured, to put it differently, through connection to the best within national tradition, exactly as the Christian faith is optimally secured by reference to what makes it distinctive and wonderful, specifically the model of Christ. In all circumstances does it mean feigning the worst of both America and Christian faith was nonexistent; it represents both meekness and conviction, a blend that serious US believers should embrace.
