A fatal railway accident in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive censure from critics regarding the pace and handling of the country's flagship government projects.
The accident happened on the trans-isthmus railway, a route developed to link the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was designed to offer an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring regional growth in the area.
“We will meticulously determine the reasons behind this accident,” stated the national leader.
The leader announced that, of the around 250 passengers on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in serious condition. The president noted plans to travel to Oaxaca to confer with those impacted.
Flagship Project of Past Leadership
The Interoceanic Train was a signature development scheme of the former leader, whose presidency ended the prior year. This rail line was a hallmark of his leadership's economic goals for the southeastern region.
Another ambitious rail project from that era, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the wider plan to revitalize the economic fortunes of a comparatively less developed part of the country.
Building Management and Worries
The building of both train projects was supervised by the armed forces, marking a notable growth of its role in civilian works. They were completed at an fast-tracked rate, beating forecasts to be partially opened before the end of that government.
However, this accelerated timeline had also sparked persistent questions over construction quality.
- Sunday's derailment was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
- This includes an previous crash this month when a train hit a truck at a railroad crossing.
- The other major rail project has also seen two non-deadly derailments.
Appeals for Review and Suspension
In the aftermath of the disaster, the leader of a major opposition party called for an prompt suspension in the development and management of all comparable projects.
This halt was requested while awaiting a thorough safety audit. The party stated that the tragedy "calls for immediate answers."
In reply, the president asserted that the train had been operating in total adherence to all security protocols. Promises were given that the government would continue to be "diligent" in both the development and running of these national initiatives.
