Fed Cuts Borrowing Costs for Second Time This Calendar Year During Economic Uncertainty

The United States monetary authority lowered interest rates on midweek, marking the second rate cut in the current year during economic turbulence originating from the government closure and tariff policies.

Move Comes at Extraordinary Time for Federal Reserve

The decision to reduce the benchmark interest rate by a quarter point to a range of 4% to 3.75% comes at an unprecedented moment for the central bank. The authority has been under significant strain to lower borrowing costs even with ongoing price increases.

Fed Statement Notes Labor Market Shifts

In a announcement, the Fed said that the unemployment rate had increased but remains low. “Employment growth have decelerated,” the release reads. “Inflation has moved up and stays somewhat elevated.”

Government Shutdown Hinders Fed’s Job

The continuing government stoppage, now among the lengthiest in US history, has also hindered the Fed’s job. Gathering of key economic data has been suspended without a timeline as employees at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are furloughed during the closure.

Information Shortage Affects Policy Decisions

The Federal Reserve typically analyzes labor statistics to assess employment trends, including the count of employment gains created to the market and the current unemployment rate. The most recent employment data was released in the beginning of last month, prior to the closure, and provided a somewhat gloomy overview of the employment scene in August.

The figure of jobs added to the economy in the summer month was down by more than 100,000 since the earlier season, and joblessness rose to 4.3% – the peak since three years ago.

Alternative Reports Indicate Ongoing Decline

Though BLS was scheduled to release September’s job market report in the start of last month, it suspended its release when the shutdown started. Employment data company ADP reported recently that the business segment eliminated thirty-two thousand jobs in last month, a sign that the employment landscape is continuing to slow.

“Both the supply and demand for workers has declined significantly,” Fed chair the Fed chairman said earlier this month, a trend he had earlier said comes from trade and immigration measures.

Price Data Shows Gradual Increase

Though BLS’s jobs report has been suspended, the bureau still issued its inflation report for September that showed that prices are going up, albeit gradually. Prices rose three percent over the last year, the highest since January. In spring, the yearly price increase was two point three percent, the minimum it has been since three years ago. The Fed’s target price increase is two percent.
