EU Could Retaliate to ‘Unjustified’ US Visa Bans, Official Says

The EU could “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it calls “unjustified” visa bans imposed by the US on five European individuals working on fighting online hate and misinformation, an EU official has said.

European Leaders Decry US Action as ‘Coercion’

European leaders including Emmanuel Macron charged Washington of “bullying and threats”, following the travel bans targeted figures who have been central to efforts to introduce laws governing US-based technology firms.

“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have led organised efforts to pressure US companies to punish American viewpoints they disagree with,” stated the US secretary of state in a social media post. “The current administration will not stand for these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”

Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined the French president in criticizing the move.

The bans were imposed this week against a former EU commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s digital governance law, as well as several activists fighting false information, including Germany and the United Kingdom.

An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance

This European legislation is seen by Washington as a type of speech restriction, whereas European leaders argue the rules are necessary to combat hate speech and disinformation.

This disagreement risks becoming a facet of a far wider existing cultural and political conflict between Washington and Europe.

Other Developments Reported Today

In other judicial news:

  • A US district judge has blocked attempts to cut federal homeland security funding to local governments that do not comply with specific federal immigration rules. The official ruled the action was “another example” of tying federal aid to adherence to directives.
  • Approval was given for the dispatch of hundreds of national guard troops to New Orleans prior to the new year, alongside an active immigration enforcement operation.
  • A Pacific Island nation will consent to take in dozens of migrants from the US in return for additional aid, after signing a formal agreement with Washington.

Furthermore, a congressional representative has initiated legal action to demand the stripping of the current president’s name from a prominent performing arts center in the capital.

Experts point out that recent statements regarding foreign petroleum resources align with a wider ideology in some quarters of “resource imperialism”, drawing comparisons with past foreign policy actions.
